Although there's NOTHING certain about it yet, there's a small chance that I might get to teach a Gender Studies class next year (there's someone else who has more seniority than I do who is both wonderful and interested, so we'll see). To high school students. I just wanted to let you all know... and to remind you (and I know this is preaching to the choir, but what if no one else will listen?!) that our shared degree has practical (as well as numerous less corporeal) uses.

If this dream becomes a reality, I would like to enlist your help as to what some of the best and most accessible intro readings are... but I don't want to get ahead of myself.

Epic fail: Baudrillard on "the obese"

I had to break up with Baudrillard. I stumbled upon some of his theory around fatness, and came to the unfortunate realization that it's really over. Somehow, fat people are cancerous, we have boundary issues, and we're so obscenely excessive we're (gasp!) bordering on transsexual. Quotes by & about Baudrillard & the fatties:

“It is like the obese person who keeps on getting fatter, the record rotating endlessly in the same groove, the cells of a tumour proliferating, like everything that has lost the formula for stopping itself.”

"The obese is in a total delirium. For he is not only large, of a size opposed to normal morphology: he is larger than large. He no longer makes sense in some distinctive opposition, but in his excess, his redundancy."

Here is a much more lucid, much less... ahem... "problematic" take on the gender testing bit. I wasn't wowed by Boylan's memoir (She's Not There), but I am duly impressed with this op-ed.
